Bogota.- Colombian Vice President Francia Márquez lamented this Sunday the death of four people, including two minors, who lost their lives after the shipwreck of a boat in the Pacific.
The boat, which was carrying between 30 and 40 passengers, set sail on Saturday from Buenaventura (Valle del Cauca) bound for Timbiquí, in the neighboring department of Cauca, according to a statement from the mayor's office of the latter municipality. "I express my sincere condolences and deep solidarity with the families and loved ones of the people who lost their lives in the tragic shipwreck that occurred in Pacific waters, including two minors," Márquez wrote on his social media. The Mayor's Office of Timbiquí added that the authorities continue to work in an articulated manner to advance the search for the missing and address the consequences of the tragedy. The statement also specified that the necessary actions are being taken to respond to the emergency, prioritizing the protection of life and support for family members. Local media indicated that the passengers were traveling between coastal towns in the Cauca Pacific when the vessel hit a floating log, which caused it to sink. This fact evokes what happened at the beginning of the month, when at least two people died and 49 were rescued after a boat with 51 travelers sank in the Gulf of Urabá, in the Colombian Caribbean. On that occasion, the motor vessel 'Mi Consentida', which covered the route between Acandí (Chocó) and Turbo (Antioquia), suffered a water ingress that caused its sinking. According to the Navy, that accident also originated from a breakdown in the hull, presumably caused by the impact with a floating wooden log.
