The international search for the six missing crew members of the American ship Mariana after the passage of super typhoon Sinlaku took a turn: the United States Coast Guard recovered the body of one of the sailors inside the capsized ship near the Northern Mariana Islands. According to information released by CBS News, Air Force divers, supported by the Coast Guard, used an underwater drone to inspect the interior of the ship and managed to recover the body on Tuesday.
Although no more people were found inside the ship, the operation to locate the five missing sailors continues, with the collaboration of agencies from Japan, Guam and New Zealand, which are participating in the search of a wide maritime area.
The authorities specified that the search is still active, especially after the discovery of a partially submerged lifeboat more than 170 km from the site where the ship appeared.
What happened to the Mariana ship and its crew
The cargo ship Mariana, flying the American flag, reported on April 15 the loss of its starboard engine while facing typhoon Sinlaku, which reached winds of up to 280 km/h (174 mph), according to data from the US agency ABC News. After that distress call, the ship stopped responding and contact was lost, prompting an international search and rescue operation. The local station WSLS reported that the extreme weather conditions hampered the initial search attempts. Finally, on April 18, a Coast Guard plane spotted the capsized vessel about 64 km northeast of Pagan Island, in the U.S. territory of the Northern Mariana Islands.
Who participates and how the search progresses
The specialized magazine The Maritime Executive indicated that the operation involves the Coast Guard and the Air Force of the United States, as well as rescue teams from Japan, Guam, and New Zealand. American and Japanese divers inspected the ship using an underwater drone, technology that allowed them to locate the body of the deceased crew member.
According to the Coast Guard, the priority is to locate the five missing sailors. The search operation covers more than 256,410 km² (99,000 square miles), with aircraft and vessels tracking both the area where the ship appeared and the surrounding areas, including the area where the lifeboat was sighted, according to CBS News.
Where and when the shipwreck occurred
The ship was operating near Pagan Island, in the Northern Mariana Islands, when Super Typhoon Sinlaku impacted the region on April 15, according to the local chain WSLS. The last communication with the ship occurred on the same day. On April 18, a plane from the Coast Guard located the capsized vessel, which had drifted more than 48 km from the point where the emergency was reported. Rescue operations are using underwater drones and advanced technology to inspect the interior of the capsized ship off Pagan Island.
Since then, the search radius has been significantly expanded and all available resources, both aerial and maritime, are deployed, according to the American agency ABC News.
What authorities say and how the situation continues
Commander Preston Hieb, search and rescue mission coordinator for the Coast Guard, stated: “We are still searching, in collaboration with our partners”, according to CBS News.
The investigation into the exact cause of the shipwreck continues. Authorities are analyzing whether there were mechanical failures, human errors, or extraordinary circumstances due to the impact of the typhoon, according to The Maritime Executive. Typhoon Sinlaku caused damage to infrastructure, power outages, and left communities in Saipan and Tinian, which requested federal aid, out of communication.
