The decision comes after the acts of violence recorded last weekend in the region, following a federal operation against the "Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación" (CJNG) in which its leader, "Rubén Nemesio Oseguera", known as "El Mencho", died. In an official statement, the governing body of aquatic sports explained that, after consultations with the Mexican Federation and the State Council for Sports Development (CODE) Jalisco, it was decided not to hold the competition.

"This decision was made after a thorough assessment of the risks in Zapopan and the state. The safety of athletes, coaches, and delegations is our top priority," the entity indicated.

Impact on Ranking

The Mexican stage was part of the qualifying calendar for the World Super Final scheduled for May 1-3 in Beijing. With the cancellation, the classification criteria will be adjusted taking as a reference the results of the stop that is held in Montreal.

International Context

The suspension occurs at a time when Jalisco is under international attention due to the recent outbreak of violence, marked by fires, blockades, and attacks on infrastructure in different parts of the state and other regions of the country. Hours before the announcement, FIFA President Gianni Infantino had reiterated his confidence in Mexico as one of the venues for the next World Cup, which will begin on June 11 and will have matches in Guadalajara, Mexico City, and Monterrey. World Aquatics recognized the organizational effort of the Mexican authorities and left open the possibility that Zapopan could host future events when security conditions allow. With this measure, the organization prioritizes the integrity of the competitors and keeps the development of its upcoming international commitments under evaluation.
