Trump: "They call me the president of Europe"

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, said this Monday that they call him "the president of Europe" for his management of the war in Ukraine and for getting NATO leaders to agree to raise defense spending to 5%. "They respect their president (referring to himself) to such an extent that, jokingly, they call me the president of Europe, which is an honor," Trump declared to reporters in the Oval Office during an event to sign executive orders. While speaking about the Democratic opposition and accusing them of funding protests to "try to destroy the country," Trump pointed out that, in his opinion, the U.S. "is now, by far, the most respected country in the world." According to him, having recovered this respect, which he denies existed during the presidency of his predecessor, Joe Biden, is due to the leadership he has shown to some European partners. "They saw him with the European leaders," Trump pointed out in relation to the summit he held last September 18 at the White House with the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, and several European leaders such as the president of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, and the French president, Emmanuel Macron, the British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, and the German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz. "I like those people. They are good people. They are great leaders," Trump affirmed, who assured that "it was a great meeting, and our country (USA) is once again respected."

Trump also highlighted the commitment he has obtained from NATO leaders to increase their quotas to the Atlantic Alliance. "They saw it with NATO, where they agreed to go from 2% to 5%," he recalled about the agreement reached by the countries of the Alliance to increase national spending on related items up to 5% of their GDP.
