Mariners Target Jorge Polanco as Key Piece for 2026

SANTO DOMINGO. The Seattle Mariners have made it clear that one of their main focuses this offseason is to secure the continuity of Dominican infielder Jorge Polanco, according to a report from the Seattle Times. After securing first baseman Josh Naylor with a five-year, US$92.5 million contract, management sees maintaining Polanco within the organization as a "priority."

The 32-year-old veteran comes from an outstanding campaign in 2025, in which he contributed decisively to Seattle winning the American League West for the first time since 2001. In 524 plate appearances, he recorded an offensive line of .265/.326/.495 with 26 home runs, demonstrating his value after his arrival from Minnesota. Polanco, known for his offensive ability more than his defense, served much of the year as a designated hitter to avoid physical overload, due to previous hamstring and knee problems. Although his defensive performance is not considered outstanding, his versatility in the infield and his production at the plate make him an attractive piece for Seattle. Furthermore, the report indicates that the organization does not rule out a possible return of the Venezuelan Eugenio Suárez, showing the team's intention to maintain the core of the team that starred in one of the best seasons in the franchise's history. In other news, the Cincinnati Reds clarified the injury of Dominican Elly de la Cruz, after previous comments raised doubts about the severity of his condition. President of operations, Nick Krall, confirmed that the shortstop suffered a strain —or partial tear— of the left quadriceps, an injury that accompanied him for much of 2025 but did not prevent him from staying in action.
