Trump: "We're going to do something with Greenland, one way or another."

Washington.- U.S. President Donald Trump assured this Friday that he will not allow "Russia or China to occupy Greenland" which is why he has decided "to do something with Greenland, whether by hook or by crook". Trump insisted on several occasions when asked by the media in the White House that the United States will do something in Greenland, "whether they like it or not," because otherwise the Danish territory will be conquered by Russia and China. The U.S. president stated that the U.S. needs to control the island for security reasons because "right now around Greenland there are Russian destroyers, there are Chinese destroyers and, in addition, there are Russian submarines everywhere."

Furthermore, he questioned Denmark's sovereignty over the territory by stating that, although he admires the Nordic country, "the fact that they landed there with a ship 500 years ago does not mean that they own that land." "I would like to reach an agreement, you know, the easy way; but if we don't do it the easy way, we'll do it the hard way," he repeated, rejecting the idea that any other arrangement that does not involve the control of Greenland is possible. "Because when we own it, we defend it. Leases are not defended in the same way: you have to be an owner," he said. "Countries have to have property; and property is defended, leases are not defended; and we will have to defend Greenland," he continued. The American leader also tried to clarify that the possible actions of the U.S. in Greenland, which according to the White House may include the use of the country's armed forces to take over the Danish territory, do not mean that it is against NATO. "NATO has to understand that I am totally in favor of NATO. I saved NATO. If it weren't for me, they wouldn't have NATO right now," he stated. Trump ended up pointing out that he maintains good relations with the leaders of China, Xi Jinping, and Russia, Vladimir Putin, although he is "very disappointed" with the latter.
