Santo Domingo.– The Dominican Republic Meteorology Institute (INDOMET) reported that this Sunday a cold front associated with a trough will continue to generate heavy rains, isolated storms and wind gusts in a large part of the national territory, which is why meteorological alerts are maintained due to possible urban floods.

The provinces under alert are: La Romana, La Altagracia, Hato Mayor, San Pedro de Macorís, El Seibo, San Cristóbal and Gran Santo Domingo, including the National District. According to the National Forecast Center, significant cloud cover and heavy rainfall are recorded from early hours in areas of the east, southeast, and northeast, with a tendency to extend during the afternoon towards the Cibao, the Central mountain range, and the northwest. For the night, the most important rains will be concentrated in the eastern and northern portion of the country. These conditions are due to the direct influence of the trough and the strengthening of the cold front, currently located over Haiti.

In Greater Santo Domingo, partly cloudy skies are expected with light to moderate rainfall during the day and night in the National District and the municipalities of Santo Domingo North, East and West.

Gradual improvement for tomorrow

INDOMET predicts that the cold front will move away from the region this Monday, allowing the entry of a mass of air with less humidity, which will cause a significant reduction in rainfall. However, scattered showers are expected in the morning hours on the Atlantic coast and, in the afternoon, towards the Cibao Valley, the Central mountain range and the southwest.

On Tuesday a drier air mass will reduce both temperatures and rainfall; however, weak and isolated showers will persist in provinces of the north, northeast, Central Cibao and southwest, due to the dragging of clouds by the northeast wind.

Notable drop in temperatures

Temperatures will remain pleasant to cool, especially at night and early morning, with a noticeable drop starting today. The minimums will range between 18 °C and 20 °C, and the maximums between 30 °C and 32 °C.

Maritime Recommendations

On the Atlantic coast, small, fragile, and medium vessels are advised to navigate close to the coast and avoid going out to sea due to abnormal wind and waves. From midday, it is advised to remain in port from Bahía de Manzanillo (Montecristi) to Cabo Francés Viejo (María Trinidad Sánchez). INDOMET urges the population to stay alert to official bulletins and take precautions against the risk of flooding and adverse maritime conditions.
