Rubén Blades defends Bad Bunny, following opinions that consider his art "trash"

Los Angeles.- The renowned singer-songwriter Rubén Blades defended Bad Bunny, who made history by winning the Grammy for best album of the year, the most important category awarded for the first time to a production in Spanish, but which, according to detractors, is considered as "trash". In an opinion article published on his social media entitled “About the Awards, and Opinions”, the Panamanian salsa singer said that “many people criticize Bad Bunny arguing that he ‘sings garbage’, ‘sings badly’ and that's why he doesn't deserve to receive any kind of award, recognition or praise”. He explained that his recent congratulations to Bad Bunny for succeeding at the Grammy Awards with ‘DeBí TiRAR MÁS FOToS’, the first album entirely in Spanish to be crowned as the best of the year, caused thousands of comments, including many negative ones.

"What's unpleasant is seeing how hatred permeates the opinion of many of those who criticize. It's a shame the degree of ignorance and lack of arguments that distinguishes most of those who insult but do not propose," warned Blades, one of the most respected voices in salsa worldwide. In his analysis, Blades cited the story of Elvis Presley, who in his time was also "insulted, censored, banned, and even denounced as an agent of Satan," only to later become a benchmark in world music.

Target of conservative criticism

Bad Bunny has been the target of criticism that even reached the White House, following his selection to star in the Super Bowl halftime show that will take place next Sunday in Santa Clara (California). The American president, Donald Trump, who was scheduled to attend, backed out arguing that he did not want to travel so far from the American capital and that he did not like the artists chosen in reference to the Puerto Rican and the rock band Green Day, who will also participate in the event. U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson also called the selection of Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, Bad Bunny's given name, to host the show "terrible." Among the Latin conservative figures and Trump followers who attacked Bad Bunny after winning the Grammy, Eduardo Verástegui stands out, who considered on his social media that what the Puerto Rican produces is "cultural garbage", aimed at massive moral destruction. Verástegui's description has been used by people who don't feel like listening to Bad Bunny's music.

"My advice: if you don't like a musical genre or an artist, or you are not willing to tolerate it, just don't listen to it. There is no need to badmouth the musician, or the singer, the band that accompanies them, or those who like to listen to them. There is no need to insult, disqualify, censor, or offend, and if that is your reaction, I suggest you seek help, because you must suffer from a problem that surely creates a great difficulty in your daily life and in that of others," Blades assured in his writing without referring to anyone specifically.

Bad Bunny Promises a Party at the Super Bowl

In his writing, the singer of 'Pedro Navajas' and 'Decisiones' also defends reggaeton, trap, rap, and hip-hop, asserting that they are manifestations of a generation "that has a new way of seeing and interpreting" the world. "What my taste rejects, I simply don't listen to, but without demanding its prohibition; I prefer that each person decides what they want," sentenced the musician who resides in California.

This Thursday, Bad Bunny assured in a press conference in San Francisco (California) that he will turn the Super Bowl stage into "a big party" and that he will bring "a lot of Puerto Rican culture" to the halftime show, in which he will rise as the first artist to headline the halftime show of the king sport of the USA with a musical catalog entirely in Spanish, making history again.
