Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. – On the occasion of International Childhood Cancer Day, health authorities, medical organizations, and social entities reiterated this February 15 the importance of early detection, timely diagnosis, and equitable access to specialized treatments for children and adolescents facing this disease. Childhood cancer is one of the leading causes of death from disease in minors worldwide. However, specialists emphasize that many types of childhood cancer have high chances of cure if they are diagnosed in time and treated appropriately. During the day, various institutions carried out awareness activities, educational talks, and symbolic acts to honor the children who are fighting the disease, as well as to remember those who have passed away. Likewise, a call was made to strengthen health systems, guarantee essential medicines, and expand psychological and social support to affected families. Among the warning signs that should prompt immediate medical consultation are persistent fever without apparent cause, unexplained weight loss, paleness, frequent bruising, continuous bone pain, unusual swelling, and extreme fatigue.

The authorities reiterated that the collective commitment — which involves the State, medical personnel, social organizations, and citizens — is key to improving the survival rates and quality of life of pediatric patients. The International Childhood Cancer Day seeks not only to raise awareness, but also to promote solidarity and support for the little warriors and their families, remembering that the fight against childhood cancer is a shared responsibility.
