A Trump advisor claims that the U.S. has the ability to block Iran "indefinitely"

Washington.- The White House's national security advisor, Stephen Miller, said this Wednesday that the U.S. has the capacity to block Iran's economy "indefinitely," after the armed forces blocked the Islamic republic's ports this week as a pressure measure amid the two-week ceasefire agreement.

"We have the ability to block them indefinitely if Iran chooses the wrong path," Miller affirmed when asked about the measures taken by the administration of US President Donald Trump in the Middle East in an interview with Fox News. Miller detailed that this embargo on Iranian ports is generating "an economic crisis and chaos", which in his opinion they will not be able to sustain for long. Miller's statements came 24 hours after the United States Central Command (Centcom) claimed to have completely blocked Iran's ports, a measure that the president anticipated after the failed negotiations in Islamabad over the weekend.

Increase in U.S. Military Presence in the Region

The Pentagon will send about 4,200 Army personnel to the Middle East in the coming days while the United States government tries to pressure Iran to reach an agreement and President Trump assures that the war "is about to end". According to The Washington Post, the thousands of extra soldiers belong to the Boxer Amphibious Group and its operational force of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, which will arrive in the area at the end of the month.

Trump assured this Wednesday in an interview on Fox Business that the war in Iran could end "very soon" and that he expected gasoline prices to return to pre-conflict levels in the coming months for the midterm elections in November. The economic consequences of Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz as retaliation for the war that began on February 28 continue and mark the development of the conflict. In an attempt to economically pressure Tehran, Trump announced this Sunday a blockade of maritime traffic entering and leaving Iranian ports, with the aim of reopening the strait, a vital passage through which 20% of the world's oil circulates.
