Santo Domingo.- The Central Electoral Board (JCE) recalled this Thursday that it is the only constitutionally authorized body to administer and safeguard the Civil Registry in the Dominican Republic.
The institution emphasized, in a statement, that any agreement between state entities involving the Civil Registry that does not have the participation of the JCE lacks legal and constitutional validity.

The Constitution supports the exclusive role of the JCE. According to Article 212 of the Dominican Constitution, the JCE is the entity in charge of administration. "This record and safeguard of births that occur in the national territory. This function includes the custody of the Civil Registry books, which must reflect the nationality of each registered person," affirmed the JCE. The Board explained that this constitutional mandate cannot be ignored or supplanted by parallel agreements between other institutions of the Dominican State. The JCE expressed its willingness to continue collaborating with various state entities through formal inter-institutional agreements, signed directly with the institution. These alliances seek to reduce the under-registration of births in the country and guarantee the right to identity for the entire population.
