Monte Plata.– The Collegiate Court of Monte Plata acquitted the former mayor of Bayaguana, Nelson Osvaldo Sosa (Opi), accused of being the intellectual author of the murder of councilman Renato de Jesús Castillo Hernández, which occurred on June 25, 2014, after denouncing alleged acts of corruption in the council.
The judges adopted the decision under the argument of insufficient evidence presented against him, which led to an acquittal. It is worth remembering that in 2021 Sosa had been sentenced to 20 years in prison for this same case. You may be interested in: http://Dictan tres meses de prisión preventiva contra Onguito Wa
The sentence generated outrage among the relatives of the murdered councilor, whose legal representatives announced that they will appeal the decision. For the murder of Castillo, five people have already been convicted: Antonio Rafael Olivo Javier (Eladio) and Fredy Alberto de la Cruz, to 20 years in prison; Marcial Cuello Soto (Prieto) and Yolkis Severino Alberto (Coqui), to 30 years; while Dauris de la Cruz (Dawri) received 10 years. The magistrates reported that the full reading of the sentence will be held on October 17th, at 11:00 a.m., in the same court. During the hearing of this second substantive trial against the former mayor, a verbal confrontation occurred between the widow of the murdered councilman and the judges of the Collegiate Court.By Jonatan Contreras
