Bogotá. - The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, warned this Tuesday that "humanity is about to fall into the abyss" of a nuclear war, in response to the statements of the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, who announced that the attacks against Iran will intensify.
"I believe Rubio is mistaken and we must dialogue about that, not fire missiles at each other," Petro said in Popayán, capital of the department of Cauca (southwest), referring to the military offensive launched by Washington along with Israel since last Saturday in an operation dubbed Epic Fury.

Rubio assured on Monday in the Capitol that "the hardest blows" of the Pentagon against Iran "are yet to come" and that the next phase of the operation will be "even more severe" than the current one, which has so far ended the life of the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Jamenei, and other figures of the Islamic republic's leadership. Petro maintained that the war is not a matter limited to the Middle East, but a global risk. "It is not a matter of Tehran, Tel Aviv or Washington (...) all of humanity is about to fall into an abyss that is nuclear war, from which no one escapes," he affirmed. The leader added that Latin America must promote international dialogue and avoid alignments that deepen the confrontation between blocs.Since the beginning of the bombings, Petro has rejected the offensive and affirmed that the American president, Donald Trump, "was wrong" with the attack against Iran.
"Nuclear weapons cannot be spread and all of them must be destroyed," Petro wrote on his X account, where he also reposted information about the death of minors in one of the bombings and lamented: "More children killed by missiles."
