The US will review resident cards of "all" migrants from "countries of concern"

Miami- The United States government announced this Thursday a "rigorous review" of the resident cards, or 'green cards', of "all" migrants coming from "countries of concern" following the shooting that left two National Guard agents injured in Washington.

"Under the direction of @POTUS (the U.S. president, Donald Trump), I have ordered a rigorous, large-scale review of every resident card of every foreigner from every country of concern," reported the director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), Joseph B. Edlow, on X.

The USCIS order, which does not specify nations of "concern", comes after it was revealed that a 29-year-old Afghan citizen, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, was the alleged attacker near the White House of two National Guard agents, who remain in critical condition. The same agency had announced the suspension of immigration requests from Afghans on Wednesday, minutes after a message to the nation from Trump, who blamed the immigration policies of his predecessor, Joe Biden (2021-2025), for Lakanwal's entry and the subsequent attack. "Protecting this country and the American people remains paramount, and the American people will not bear the cost of the previous administration's reckless resettlement policies. American security is non-negotiable," Edlow concluded now in his two-paragraph pronouncement.

Although authorities did not detail the affected countries, Trump banned the entry of citizens from twelve nations to the United States in June to protect "national security": Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.

He also restricted entry from seven other countries: Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela. In his message to the nation on Wednesday, Trump called the shooting "an act of hate" and vowed to tighten immigration measures against Afghans, in addition to calling the suspect "an animal". Authorities identified the injured agents on the morning of this Thursday as Sarah Beckstrom, 20 years old, and Andrew Wolfe, 24, in addition to revealing that the alleged attacker lived with his wife and five children in Washington state, from where he traveled in his vehicle to the national capital. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that Lakanwal worked for a CIA-backed military unit in Afghanistan and moved to the United States in 2021 with the 'Operation Allies Welcome' program, aimed at supporting Afghan citizens after the US military withdrawal from the country.
