COE places 20 provinces on yellow alert due to threat of heavy rains

Santo Domingo. – The Emergency Operations Center (COE) intensified this Thursday the vigilance levels in a large part of the country, raising to 20 the provinces on yellow alert, including the National District, while another seven remain under green alert due to the incidence of a trough. The yellow demarcations are: Santo Domingo, San José de Ocoa, Distrito Nacional, Santiago Rodríguez, San Pedro de Macorís, Monte Cristi, Hermanas Mirabal, Santiago, Puerto Plata, Monseñor Nouel, La Altagracia, San Cristóbal, Monte Plata, La Romana, Duarte (Bajo Yuna), El Seibo, Hato Mayor, La Vega, Sánchez Ramírez, Espaillat and San Juan. The following provinces are under green alert: María Trinidad Sánchez, Valverde, Independencia, Samaná, Dajabón, Elías Piña, and Azua. The measure is adopted following reports from the Dominican Institute of Meteorology and the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources, which establish the continuation of rainfall, as well as the increase in soil moisture in the demarcations under alert.

Faced with this situation, the COE urged the population to refrain from crossing rivers, streams, and ravines with high volumes of water, as well as avoiding the use of spas in the provinces under alert. Likewise, INDOMET recommended that operators of fragile, small and medium-sized vessels on the Atlantic coast navigate with caution near the coastal perimeter and not venture out to sea, due to abnormal winds and dangerous waves. On the Caribbean coast, conditions remain unrestricted. The authorities explained that a humid and unstable atmosphere persists, associated with the presence of a trough at various levels of the troposphere. Added to this are the effects of the southeast wind and daytime heating, conditions that will favor, during the afternoon and night, cloud increases accompanied by heavy to very heavy showers, thunderstorms, wind gusts and possible hailstorms.
