Faride Raful calls on the private sector for social involvement in building a safer DR

Santo Domingo.- The American Chamber of Commerce of the Dominican Republic (AMCHAMDR) held its luncheon for the month of August this Tuesday, in which the guest speaker, the Minister of Interior and Police, Faride Raful, offered her presentation, entitled “Security and investment: strategic alliance for sustainable development”. During her speech, the minister emphasized that security must be addressed as a collective commitment in which the State, the private sector, and citizens work in a coordinated manner.

“Public safety is a primary and non-delegable obligation of the State, but it needs partners. Even the most preventive police cannot act alone. That is why we invite the private sector to ally with the new preventive police we are building,” he affirmed.

The official highlighted that the advances in crime reduction are significant, but that security cannot be limited to the coercive component.
“Donde hay un empleo formal, hay un joven menos vulnerable al crimen. Donde hay una cancha deportiva apadrinada, hay un joven que se aleja del alcohol y se reconoce en la disciplina. Invertir en capital humano no es filantropía, es la infraestructura social más efectiva para construir seguridad”, expresó.

The minister also referred to the progress of the Police Reform promoted under the leadership of President Luis Abinader, which has allowed the training of more than 20,000 agents under a new curriculum based on human rights, the installation of more than 10,000 cameras to the 911 system and the reconstruction of 70 detachments. "This transformation has the clear objective of turning the police into an efficient and preventive institution, which works hand in hand with the communities," Raful pointed out. For her part, the president of AMCHAMDR, Francesca Rainieri, highlighted that security is an indispensable pillar for attracting investments and strengthening the country's competitiveness. "There is no sustainable investment without legal, institutional, and citizen security. Security reduces uncertainty, decreases transaction costs, and creates a favorable environment for capital to take risks, innovate, and generate employment. In the Dominican Republic, we have built a track record of trust with investors, but we must recognize that security is a public good that demands permanent improvement and shared responsibility from everyone," said Rainieri.
