New York. - The cold wave that has been affecting the northeastern United States since the passage of the first major winter storm in January has already left 17 dead in New Jersey, according to local media.
The 17 deaths were recorded as of last Friday, before the weekend when temperatures dropped again to very dangerous levels, according to a spokesperson for the state's Department of Health, Janie Thompson, cited by the media.
He also indicated that state officials are working to obtain updated information on the weekend's cold snap, in which an Arctic front reached the northeast.
Among the deaths is a 65-year-old man who lost his life while shoveling snow on January 25.
The winter storm affected millions of people and, in addition to deaths, caused power outages, falling trees, cancellations and delays of thousands of flights, and accidents on highways.
