President Luis Abinader highlighted in his accountability report this Friday that the installed capacity increased from 4,921 megawatts in 2020 to 7,120 megawatts in 2025, for a growth of nearly 45%.
In that regard, it reported that in 2025, 1,138 megawatts were incorporated into the National Interconnected Electrical System, through 16 strategic projects with a private investment exceeding US$1,500 million.
Of that new capacity, 58% —697 megawatts— came from renewable energies, mainly solar and wind, while 438 megawatts corresponded to efficient thermal generation, largely natural gas, guaranteeing system firmness and reliability.
He also announced that at the end of March, the Energía 2000 plant will begin operations, starting in simple cycle with 290 MW, which will be completed up to 414 MW in combined cycle for the summer.
While San Felipe I with 460 MW will start operating by May 2027; Manzanillo I with 426 MW will do so in December 2027, Manzanillo ll in the summer of 2028.
In addition, he revealed that 138 MW of AES battery storage will be coming online by the summer of 2026 and about 300 MW of energy storage batteries that are in the process of being awarded in the coming days and will be ready in approximately 18 months, which will significantly help stabilize the electrical system.
