Specialist explains what a tourniquet is and how its timely use can save lives

Santo Domingo. Regarding the death of driver David Abreu Quesada in Santiago, and the lack of first aid as a preventive measure in emergencies, Dr. Pilar Guerrero explains the importance of using a tourniquet as an emergency measure to control severe bleeding, especially in the extremities. The specialist indicated that a tourniquet is a device or instrument used to stop the flow of blood in a limb by applying pressure, with the aim of controlling or stopping a hemorrhage that could endanger life.

“It is a first aid technique that can make the difference between life and death when there is significant blood loss. In emergency situations, there are three physical methods for managing wounds or external bleeding: wound packing, compressive bandage, and tourniquet, the latter being key in cases of massive bleeding,” explained the doctor.

Regarding its application, it was indicated that it should be placed approximately five centimeters above the wound, tightening firmly until the bleeding and pulse circulation stop. In addition, it was emphasized that speed is essential, recommending that the procedure be performed in an estimated time of 15 to 20 seconds.

Likewise, he explained that, although commercial tourniquets exist, in the absence of these available materials such as straps, fabrics or clothing can be used, provided they allow the necessary pressure to be exerted. The doctor warned that the maximum recommended use time is up to two hours, so it is crucial to note the time of its placement to avoid subsequent complications. Regarding the case of Abreu Quesada, who died after suffering a stab wound to the femoral artery following a traffic accident, Guerrero maintained that the timely application of a tourniquet could have been crucial in saving the driver's life. The case has reignited the debate on the importance of first aid training and rapid response to emergencies, especially in situations where every minute is crucial to saving a life.
