U.S. raises incentive to $2,600 for migrants to voluntarily leave the country

Austin.- The U.S. announced this Wednesday that it will increase to $2,600 the economic incentive it offers to migrants who are in the country irregularly so that they leave voluntarily or "self-deport." This was reported in a statement by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), where it referred to this increase in the incentive - previously $1,000 - as a "gift" for the anniversary since Republican Donald Trump assumed the presidency. In the writing, DHS assured that since January 2025, 2.2 million people who were in the country irregularly have voluntarily self-deported, and that "tens of thousands" have done so using the CBP application.

Deportations of migrants in the U.S..

However, these figures provided by DHS have been questioned by immigration experts, as the agency "has not provided data" to support them. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported in December that it has deported a total of 622,000 people since Trump took office. An analysis by the Brookings Institution published last week, however, questions this figure and estimates that the real number is much lower, between 310,000 and 350,000 deportations. It is below the 778,000 repatriations carried out in the last full fiscal year of the Joe Biden administration and far from the Trump team's promise to reach one million deportations per year.
