Vehicle catches fire on César Nicolás Penson avenue; driver unharmed

Santo Domingo.– A vehicle caught fire on Wednesday afternoon while traveling on César Nicolás Penson Avenue, corner of Máximo Gómez, near the National Theater, in an incident that paralyzed the area for several minutes and caused great uncertainty in those who were passing through the area. The incident occurred around 5:52 in the afternoon, when the driver Jonatahan Natanael Paredes, 29 years old, was traveling alone in the vehicle, a white Chinese-made Jimbei from 2017 used for private transportation services. Paredes, who provides services as a driver for a private transportation company that works with call centers, free trade zones, and other companies, reported that he was on his way to pick up passengers at a call center when the incident occurred. “I was just coming from the workshop. My brother sent me to get the bus and, as I was going up here, the bus went ‘boom’ and immediately a flame started coming out. I jumped out of the vehicle and even the AMET officer who was next to me on the street ran away,” narrated the young man.

The driver was grateful that the fire occurred when he was traveling alone and not with passengers on board, as at the time of the fire he was going to pick up employees from one of the companies for which he provides service.

“Thank God it only happened to me and not with the people I was going to pick up, because then things would have been ugly,” he expressed.

Units from the National District Fire Department, along with members of the Digesett, arrived at the scene, who managed to extinguish the fire and maintain traffic flow to avoid greater congestion in the area. Captain Daniel Arias of the National District Fire Department reported that the causes of the fire are unknown at this time, while the corresponding investigations continue.
