Santo Domingo.- The deputy Charlie Mariotti for the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) announced at a press conference this Tuesday, May 13, that he will submit a draft resolution to the plenary of the Chamber of Deputies requesting President Luis Abinader to withdraw the Organic Law on Freedom of Expression and Audiovisual Media.

The legislator of the National District indicated this morning that this proposal violates constitutional aspects in its form and substance, which is why it must be immediately withdrawn from the National Congress, he also pointed out that the country does not need a censorship or gag law, as he describes the project submitted in the Senate by the legal consultancy of the Executive Power.

He also expressed that he does not understand who is behind this legislative initiative, since the President stated yesterday Monday in La Semanal that he has not put a single comma in said document, but that it is the legal consultancy under his presidency that delivers it to the Senate.

For Mariotti, there must be a legal framework that regulates the creation of content on social networks and digital platforms, but that does not pose obstacles nor does it become a tool for the surveillance and control of citizens, since what is at stake, according to his understanding, is not only freedom of expression, but also democracy.
