Who wrote the Hymn to Dominican Mothers?

Santo Domingo.- The Hymn to Dominican Mothers, one of the most emblematic pieces of the country's school and cultural repertoire, was written by Trina de Moya de Vásquez, renowned poet, educator, and First Lady of the Dominican Republic.

Born in La Vega on January 13, 1863, Trina de Moya left a literary legacy of great value, standing out for her defense of the family, education, and the role of women in society. Her poem “El Día de las Madres”, included in her book Patria y Hogar (1929), was musically adapted and became the current Mother's Day Anthem.

The anthem was first performed on May 30, 1926 in the Church of the former Dominican Convent in Santo Domingo. Since then, it has been sung every year in school and official events that celebrate Mother's Day in the Dominican Republic, the last Sunday of May.

Hymn to Mothers

Come, you who dwell in the fields and the city
And let us sing a hymn of intense filial love,
Let us sing of the mothers' tenderness, their striving,
And their noble attribute of unparalleled selflessness.

Let us all celebrate the most beautiful feast,
The one that moves our hearts the most,
A meritorious feast that we honor with it
All the mothers of Creation.

Who like a mother with her sweet
Charm dispels our fear, calms us
Pain, just by offering us her lap
Holy just by singing us ballads of love.

From her, the child learns the tender smile
The young man, the noble, beneficent action
The old man remembers the maternal prayer
And in his soul, resignation blossoms.

Come, you who dwell in the countryside, to the city
and let us sing a hymn of intense filial love,
let us sing of mothers' tenderness, their striving
and the noble attribute of unparalleled selflessness.

Let us cover with flowers the simple tomb
Of mothers who dwell in eternity
And let us adorn with flowers the forehead that still shines,
Still shines and shines the motherhood.

For her, let's choose fresh lilies
Symbolic flowers of the ideal soul,
White as the soul of good mothers
And with something mystical and sentimental.

Bright, clear little stars, sisters,
Of those that surround the divine temple,
Of her who is a model of Christian mothers,
Mothers of God, Christ born in Bethlehem.

Come, you inhabitants of the countryside and the city,
And let us sing a hymn of intense filial love,
Let us sing of mothers' tenderness, their striving,
And their noble attribute of unparalleled selflessness.
