Musk to cancel key NASA development amid Trump's threats against SpaceX

The magnate and CEO of the aerospace company SpaceX, Elon Musk, announced this Thursday that he will decommission the Dragon spacecraft, used by the United States to transport material and people to the International Space Station (ISS), amid his break with the government of Donald Trump.

The decision was announced by Musk himself on X in response to a post by Trump where he threatened to end the contracts that Musk has with the federal government.

“The best way to save money from our (State) budgets is to end Elon's subsidies and government contracts. I was always surprised that (Joe) Biden hadn't done it,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account.

Washington relies entirely on the Dragon spacecraft to transport personnel and objects to the ISS. More recently, in March of this year, the US used this capsule to bring back NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams after they spent months unable to return to Earth.

SpaceX is one of NASA's main contractors and has received over $17 billion from the federal government in the last ten years.

Trump and Musk were embroiled in a public battle this Thursday, with a series of posts and crossed threats on social media that marked a dramatic end to their relationship.

Last week, Musk stepped down as head of the Department of Governmental Efficiency (DOGE), responsible for leading the reduction of public spending in the Trump administration, due to disagreements with the Republican's fiscal plan.

Although both staged a friendly exit at an event before the press last Friday at the White House, Musk has increased criticism against Trump and the Republican declared this Thursday "very disappointed" with this attitude.

“Look, Elon and I had an excellent relationship. I don't know if we'll continue to have it,” Trump said in the Oval Office. “He said very nice things about me, and he hasn't said anything bad about me personally, but I'm sure that will be next. But I'm very disappointed in Elon. I've helped him a lot.”

Trump also claimed that Musk's fierce attacks against the bill were due to the proposal to eliminate consumer tax credits for electric vehicles. Musk, CEO of electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla, has stated his opposition to the bill because it will increase the federal deficit.

Trump suggested that Musk, who received a farewell full of praise from Trump last week after overseeing his campaign to reduce the costs of the federal bureaucracy, was upset because he missed working for Trump.

“It's not the first one,” Trump said. “There are people who leave my administration... and then, at some point, they miss it very much, and some accept it and others even become hostile.”

While Trump was speaking, Musk wrote on X: “Slim Beautiful Bill for the victory”, a reference to the official title of the bill, “Big Beautiful Bill Act”.
