Abinader affirms DR advances towards a future of prosperity and sustainability

New York. — President Luis Abinader stated last night that the Dominican Republic is taking firm steps towards a future of prosperity and sustainability. Within the framework of the high-level meetings held at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, President Abinader highlighted that the country is a living example of the importance of collaboration between the government and the private sector. During his speech at the dinner with Ibero-American entrepreneurs from the Business Council Alliance for Ibero-America (CEAPI) and the Adam Smith Center for Economic Freedom, held at the Harvard Club, the Dominican president highlighted the crucial role played by the public and private sectors in the social and economic transformation of the region. He highlighted that, in recent years, the country has managed to consolidate a growth model that combines macroeconomic stability, openness to investment, and a strong commitment to the social agenda. Likewise, President Abinader indicated that thanks to these efforts, poverty in the nation has significantly decreased, going from 25% in 2019 to 16.6% in the last quarter, with projections to reduce it even further to 15% by the end of the year. In that sense, the Dominican ruler highlighted the Dominican Republic's progress in the fight against hunger, by reducing undernourishment from 8.7% to 3.6%, with the goal of reaching the category of "hunger-free country" by reaching 2.5% and noted that these figures are the result of a joint effort of clear public policies, business investment and social commitment. The Dominican president indicated the relevance of avoiding the false dichotomy between economic growth and equity. "It's not about choosing between strong companies or solid states, it's about achieving both to benefit our communities," he stated. The event was also an opportunity to invite the international community to the 2025 Summit of the Americas, which will be held in December in Punta Cana. This forum will be key to reactivating the economic agenda of Ibero-America and strengthening cooperation between governments, entrepreneurs, and civil society. The Dominican head of state expressed that the Dominican Republic is experiencing a historic moment to seize the opportunities arising from the reconfiguration of value chains, the energy transition, and digitalization, positioning the country at the center of a new global economic map. He also pointed out that the Caribbean nation has promoted high-impact projects in key sectors such as infrastructure, renewable energy, tourism, and education, with an investment exceeding 800 billion pesos. In that sense, President Abinader explained that the tourism industry has reached record figures, with almost 12 million annual visitors. He also highlighted the development of new tourist destinations in places like Pedernales and Miches in El Seibo, which are attracting national and international investments.

The Dominican ruler also highlighted the fundamental role of trust in the development process, noting that "where there is no trust, there is no investment, and where there is no investment, there is no employment or development." In a moment of global uncertainty, the Dominican president stated that cooperation and pragmatism are essential to face the challenges of the future. As a first look, he revealed an innovative project related to rare earth mining, the largest known deposit in Latin America, which could position the Dominican Republic as a key player in the global economy.

Upon concluding, President Abinader ended his speech with an inspiring message, recalling the importance of freedom, honesty, and idealism to build a better future. “Dreaming like Don Quixote is not denying reality, it is illuminating it”, he concluded.
