A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck western Japan this Tuesday, detailed in a message the Meteorological Agency of Japan (JMA), without a tsunami alert being activated for the moment nor authorities having reported material damage. The earthquake occurred at 10:18 local time (1:18 GMT) about ten kilometers deep and with its epicenter in the east of Shimane prefecture, according to the JMA, reaching level 5 on the Japanese seismic scale (of 7 levels and focused on measuring the shaking on the surface and potential damage). The earthquake was followed by a series of aftershocks located in the same area, the largest of which was magnitude 5.1 at 10:28 local time (1:28 GMT).

For the time being, no damage or injuries have been reported, and the JMA did not activate a tsunami alert either. However, the transport company JR West confirmed delays on the bullet train route between Osaka and the southern city of Fukuoka due to a power outage, according to the Japanese television network NHK.

For the time being, no irregularities have been detected at the Shimane nuclear power plant, located about forty kilometers from the epicenter and whose second unit is currently operational, said the company in charge of the plant, Chugoku Electric Power. Nor were any anomalies detected at the Ikata nuclear power plant, according to Shikoku Electric Power.

Japan sits on the so-called Ring of Fire, one of the world's most active seismic zones, and suffers earthquakes relatively frequently, so its infrastructure is specially designed to withstand tremors.
