Bangkok.- At least one woman and two students, one of them a 14-year-old girl, were admitted to hospitals in southern Thailand after being injured in a shooting recorded this Wednesday at a school in the southern province of Songkhla.
The Ministry of Public Health announced on Facebook that a woman was shot in the chest and torso and a 14-year-old student was shot in the abdomen. Both have undergone surgery. You may be interested in: http://Un hombre irrumpe a tiros en escuela y mantiene como rehenes a estudiantes en Tailandia
In addition, another student from Patong Prathan Kiriwat School in Hat Yai city, where the incident took place, is being treated in a hospital because he fell during the shooting and suffered an ankle injury.Although the authorities did not offer more details about the injured people at the moment, the public chain Thai PBS assures that the woman who was shot is the director of the educational center.
Police said they have arrested a man suspected of bursting into the school with gunfire, where he took teachers and students hostage on Wednesday afternoon. Also via Facebook, the Police stated that the situation was "under control" and that "all hostages" were "safe" some time after the assailant entered the school around 4:45 p.m. local time (09:45 GMT) and fired two or three rounds of shots. It is unknown how many people were inside the school at the time of the event, nor what ages the students are. According to provincial authorities, the incident occurred as classes were coming to an end. Southern Thailand has been a common scene of attacks in recent decades due to an insurgency by separatist groups who claim independence for some areas of Songkhla and three provinces, predominantly Muslim. Thailand has a high rate of firearms per capita, and shootings are not unusual. In July of last year, a shooting at a Bangkok market left three dead, while in 2022 another 34 people died, including 22 children, after an attack by an ex-police officer at a daycare center.
