Santo Domingo. – President Luis Abinader clarified this Monday that, although the Dominican Republic will be the host country of the 2025 Summit of the Americas, it is up to the United States to make the calls to the participating governments.
“It's good to remember two points: while we are the host, the convener of the summit is the United States; it is a summit that the United States created and promotes. It is similar to the Ibero-American Summit, which in 2023 was held in the Dominican Republic, but the convener was Spain,” explained Abinader during “La Semanal con la Prensa.”
You The leader referred to the exclusion of Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, which are not part of the Organization of American States (OAS) and did not participate in the previous edition in Los Angeles in 2023. These decisions prompted the presidents of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, and Colombia, Gustavo Petro, to refrain from attending. Abinader emphasized that the summit goes beyond a meeting between heads of state. "The summit of presidents is the last part; you have the business summit, the one of civil society, the one of youth and meetings on the environment. There will be great activities around here," he pointed out, highlighting the diversity of spaces that make up the event. It is reminded that the event will take place from December 4th to 5th in Punta Cana.
