Starmer says the UK faces its "most serious and immediate" threat since the Cold War

London.- British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, said this Monday that the United Kingdom faces a threat that is "more serious, more immediate and more unpredictable than at any other time since the Cold War", and anticipated that his country's military is moving towards preparing for a possible armed conflict.

The Labour leader issued this warning in a speech in Glasgow, Scotland, on the occasion of the presentation of the Strategic Defence Review, commissioned from experts by the Government, to address growing threats, such as nuclear or cyberattacks.

There is a "growing Russian aggression," whose "reckless actions increase the cost of living in our country," said Starmer, and highlighted that the UK is moving towards "war readiness as the central objective of our armed forces."

He stressed that the threats demand "a new era for defense and security" and pointed out that his Government "will never risk" the national security of the United Kingdom.

"When we are directly threatened by states with advanced military forces, the most effective way to deter them is to be prepared. And, frankly, to show them that we are ready to achieve peace through strength," he added.

He explained that the United Kingdom will build a combat force that is more integrated, more prepared, and more lethal than ever.

As he emphasized, everything the United Kingdom does in defense will contribute to the strength of NATO, a collective military alliance that implies "that we will never fight alone".

"It is a fundamental source of our strategic strength. Therefore, our defense policy will always prioritize NATO," he added.

Another goal of the Government is to emphasize innovation, highlighted Starmer, who cited as war material drones, destroyers, aircraft with Artificial Intelligence (AI), in order to create armed forces ten times more lethal by the year 2035.

He added that "every citizen of this country has a role to play, because we must recognize that things have changed in today's world."

They will build up to 12 new attack submarines

As part of the defense investment, the Government announced last night that the country will build up to 12 new nuclear-powered attack submarines and will invest 15 billion pounds (17.7 billion euros) in its nuclear warhead program.

On Saturday, it was already announced that it will invest 1.5 billion pounds (approximately 1.76 billion euros) in the construction of at least six ammunition and explosive component factories, while it will acquire up to 7,000 British-made long-range weapons.
