Washington.- The president of the United States, Donald Trump, said this Saturday that he would have to "analyze" whether he supports Nobel Peace Prize winner and opposition leader María Corina Machado as leader of a transition in Venezuela after the capture of the current president of the South American country, Nicolás Maduro.
Asked in an interview with Fox News about whether he would support Machado to take power in Venezuela after U.S. special forces removed Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, from Caracas, Trump responded: "Well, we're going to have to look at it right now."You may be interested in: http://La fiscal general de EE.UU. publica la acusación formal contra Maduro y su esposa
"(In Venezuela) they have a vice president, as you know. I mean, I don't know what kind of elections those were, but, you know, Maduro's elections were a disgrace," insisted the Republican, who accuses the Venezuelan of leading a drug trafficking network. Trump insisted that Maduro - whom the U.S. does not recognize as the legitimate president of Venezuela - had a "rigged election" in 2024, which is why "people have no appreciation for him." "He had very little loyalty, if any. He was a dictator, a tough guy, and he ruled with an iron fist, and people can't believe how lucky he was," added the US president. Machado, seen as the key figure of the Venezuelan opposition, received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2025 for her fight for democracy in her country. After the news broke, the activist and politician dedicated the award to Trump, who has thanked her on several occasions for the gesture. Unable to run as a candidate for the opposition coalition, Machado gave her support to former diplomat Edmundo González, whom her platform and several international governments recognize as the true winner of the elections in which Maduro claimed victory. Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez denounced this Saturday that the whereabouts of the country's president, Nicolás Maduro, and the first lady, Cilia Flores, are unknown, and requested proof of life from the U.S., after Trump confirmed an attack against the country and announced the capture of both to answer to the American Justice.
