LOS ANGELES. Puerto Rican closer Edwin Díaz will undergo surgery this Wednesday to remove loose bodies in his right elbow, the Los Angeles Dodgers team reported prior to the closing of their series against the Rockies.

The 32-year-old pitcher was placed on the injured list and is expected to return during the second half of the season. In his place, the organization promoted left-hander Jake Eder from Triple-A.
Díaz is coming off a complicated performance on Sunday, when he allowed three runs without being able to retire a single batter. In the current season, he has a 1-0 record with an ERA of 10.50 in seven appearances.
Throughout his career in the Major Leagues, the right-hander has a 29-36 record with a 2.91 ERA in 527 games, as well as 257 saves in 300 opportunities and 849 strikeouts. He has also been called up to the All-Star Game three times.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts expressed his concern after the reliever's most recent outing: "We know the level he has and when we don't see it, it generates concern. We will have to talk to him," he said.
One of the indicators that set off the alarms was the decrease in the speed of his fastball. Although in the last seasons he averaged between 97.2 and 99.1 miles per hour, this year it has dropped to 95.7 mph, even reaching 92.8 mph in his last appearance.
For his part, Eder, 27 years old, was acquired from the Nationals at the beginning of April. In Triple-A he has pitched 5.1 innings with two runs allowed and already has previous experience in the Major Leagues.
Edwin Díaz will undergo elbow surgery and will miss several weeks with the Dodgers
