Santo Domingo.-The Court of Appeals of the National District upheld the 20-year prison sentence imposed on Argenis Contreras for the death of lawyer and university professor Yuniol Ramírez, which occurred in October 2017.
The decision was adopted by judges Daniel Nolasco Olivo, Nancy María Joaquín Guzmán and Jury Tavariz Núñez, members of the Third Chamber of the Criminal Court, who rejected the appeal filed by the defense of the convicted. According to the ruling, the court concluded that the sentence issued in the first instance complies with current legal regulations and does not present irregularities or procedural flaws that warrant its annulment or modification. With this decision, Contreras's criminal responsibility is confirmed in the case that generated a wide impact on public opinion, due to the academic and professional profile of the victim and the circumstances in which the crime occurred. The Public Ministry valued the ratification of the sentence as an important step in the consolidation of justice, while the defense still retains the possibility of appealing to higher instances, as established by law.
