When to ask for help

If you are unsure whether stress is the cause, or if you have taken steps to control it but are still experiencing symptoms, consult your doctor. The professional may want to know if there are other possible causes. Or consider going to a counselor or therapist, who can help you find the sources of your stress and learn new ways to cope with difficult situations. And if you are afraid of harming yourself, call 911. Also, seek urgent help immediately if you have chest pain, especially if you also have shortness of breath, jaw pain, back, shoulder, or arm pain, sweating, dizziness, or nausea. These may be warning signs of a heart attack and not simply symptoms of stress.
