Indonesian authorities lost track on Monday of a commercial helicopter with eight people on board, whose last registration took place in the south of Borneo Island, about 1,400 kilometers southeast of Jakarta, according to the rescue agency Basarnas.
In a statement, authorities explained that it is a BK 117-D3 owned by the airline Eastindo Air that departed from Kotabaru airport and was scheduled to arrive at the Palangaraya base 90 minutes later.
However, the last communication was recorded eight minutes after takeoff, so Basarnas has activated a search operation that was maintained eight hours after communication with the aircraft was lost.
In the helicopter - belonging to a charter company that offers air transport services, medical evacuation, aerial inspection, and firefighting - were the pilot, an engineer, and six other people whose names have been published by the authorities, without further details.
The incident is recorded in Borneo, the third-largest island in the world, which has lush tropical rainforests and whose territory is shared by Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei.
