The interim president of Peru, José Jerí, declared this Friday that the main topic of interest in the bilateral meeting with his Ecuadorian counterpart, Daniel Noboa, next Friday in Quito will be the joint fight against transnational crime.
In statements to the press, Jeri remarked that for his country "one of the main issues is how to jointly fight transnational crime, which recycles itself from one step to another."
He added that "there are several agenda items", such as the pollution of border rivers or the Puyango Tumbes irrigation project, but that "without a doubt, an issue that is extremely important to us today is how, jointly, we can combat transnational crime", a scourge that affects both neighboring countries.

He recalled that he had already addressed that issue with Noboa in a recent telephone communication, in which they agreed to schedule the sixteenth Binational Cabinet and presidential meeting in Quito for the 12th of next month. "Here we are at war against crime (…), if we make a mistake in any type of measures, (we will have to) rethink it, here no one is perfect, it is not a Government that has the last word on everything", affirmed Jerí when asked about the state of emergency declared on the border with Chile to prevent the entry of irregular migrants. On that subject, the interim president pointed out that that border in the south of the country is "very complicated to protect" and that he has to evaluate complementary measures to solve the underlying problem. The Executive highlighted that the meeting in Quito would give a political boost at the highest level to cooperation in priority areas such as the fight against transnational organized crime and the integrated management of water resources in cross-border basins, when requesting travel permission for Jerí to Congress. In addition, he specified that, as part of the meeting, the leaders will sign the Presidential Declaration of Quito and adopt the Quito Action Plan 2025, which will guide the joint work during the 2025-2026 period through binational commitments assumed in areas such as infrastructure and border development, security and defense, environmental and energy, trade and tourism, and social affairs. The last binational meeting between both countries was in Lima in July 2024, when Noboa met with the now-removed President Dina Boluarte and signed the Presidential Declaration of Lima, with 49 points to strengthen the bilateral relationship and improve the quality of life of the populations on both sides of the border.
