LOS ANGELES. – While numerous celebrities crossed the Atlantic to attend the luxurious wedding of billionaire Jeff Bezos to former reporter Lauren Sánchez in Venice, actress Charlize Theron decided to stay in Los Angeles, but did not go unnoticed. During the fifth edition of the annual gala of her foundation Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project, held at Universal Studios, the Oscar winner made an ironic joke that quickly went viral: “I think we are the only people who didn't receive an invitation to Bezos' wedding. But it doesn't matter, because they suck and we are cool,” she said laughing, unleashing applause from the audience.

Far from the Venetian yachts, Theron gathered figures from the world of cinema and music for a philanthropic purpose: to raise funds to support vulnerable young Africans, a cause she has been driving for years with great commitment.

A gala with a message

Among the guests at the gala were KiKi Layne, Henry Golding, and Reneé Rapp, who performed some musical pieces during the night. Theron, visibly moved, thanked the attendees for supporting the work of her foundation at a time when "the world seems to be on fire." Beyond the jokes, Charlize used the event to raise her voice on issues she considers urgent, including the recent immigration raids in California and the growing gender violence, as well as the setbacks in reproductive rights and the LGBTQ+ community. “Migration policies have destroyed families; I am not talking about criminals, I am talking about hardworking people. There are fewer and fewer rights for women, the lives of queer and trans people are being erased, and gender violence is only increasing,” she stated firmly. “This is not just a political issue, it is something deeply personal. Therefore: fuck the politicians!” she concluded to an ovation.

Your story with migration

Charlize Theron knows firsthand what it means to deal with the American immigration system. At 19, she was deported from the country for exceeding the time allowed on her work visa. After years of perseverance in the film industry, she finally managed to obtain citizenship in 2007. The actress, recognized for both her talent and her activism, once again proved that she doesn't need a European red carpet to make headlines. With humor, sincerity, and conviction, she reaffirmed her commitment to the causes she has defended for decades.
