Miami, Florida .— On a night filled with drama and emotions, the Miami Marlins staged a comeback for the ages by defeating the New York Yankees 13-12 at LoanDepot Park, achieving their eighth walk-off victory of the season and sending a clear message: they are ready to fight for the postseason.

The Florida team, which recently received a vote of confidence from the management by retaining figures like Sandy Alcántara, Edward Cabrera, and Anthony Bender at the trade deadline, responded with a display of grit and determination in front of the 32,299 fans present.

A Comeback in Chapters

The Marlins were down 6-0 in the fifth inning, but a two-run homer by Javier Sanoja and an RBI single by Liam Hicks narrowed the gap. Later, in the seventh, a grand slam by Kyle Stowers and a homer by Sanoja —only the second of his career— tied the score, before Agustín Ramírez, former Yankees prospect, put Miami ahead with a single to left for a momentary 10-9 lead. The rollercoaster continued as the Yankees regained the lead 12-10 in the ninth inning. However, the ending was like a movie: Sanoja and Jakob Marsee got on base against Camilo Doval, Xavier Edwards tied the game with a single that José Caballero missed, and Ramírez sealed the victory with a ground ball in front of the plate that allowed the winning run.

“We are going to keep fighting until we complete 162 games… If we achieve that, I believe we will be in a good position at the end of the year,” Edwards declared.

Records and curious facts

  • It's the first time since 1940 that the Yankees have lost as visitors scoring 12 or more runs.
  • It's also the first loss in nine innings with at least 12 runs scored since 1973.
  • The Marlins have 27 come-from-behind victories this season.
Manager Clayton McCullough highlighted the character of the group: “We are not the favorites, but we believe we can compete with anyone. We showed it tonight. The fighting spirit continues to shine”.

Next commitment

With this victory, Miami improves its record to 53-55, remaining only seven games away from the last wild card in the National League. The team will seek to maintain its momentum in the second game of the series against the Yankees this Saturday.
