UASD awards the title of "Honorary Professor" to Dr. Rafael Sánchez Español

Writing.- The Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) awarded the title of "Honorary Professor" of the Faculty of Health Sciences (FCS), to Dr. Rafael Sánchez Español, for his significant contributions to the development of Dominican medicine, being a pioneer in laparoscopic and robotic surgery in the country. The ceremony, held in the University Council Hall of UASD, was led by the rector, maestro Editrudis Beltrán Crisóstomo, along with the members of the University Council and academic authorities of the institution.

In the welcome words, the dean of the FCS, doctor Mario Uffre, highlighted the meritorious academic and professional career of doctor Sánchez Español. "The distinction we confer today is not just a title; it is a recognition of the commitment, excellence, and extraordinary contribution that Dr. Sánchez Español has made throughout his life in favor of higher education, professional practice in health, scientific-technological innovation, scientific research, and the intellectual development of our community," expressed Uffre. Mario Uffre highlighted that the recipient is one of the pioneers in the implementation of laparoscopy and a pioneer in the Cibao region, making great advances in this discipline. “Sánchez Español entered the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD), obtaining in 1977 the title of Doctor in Medicine, Cum Laude. Currently, he is the general director of the Hospital Metropolitano de Santiago (HOMS), of which he is the founder and ideologist, managing to consolidate it as an advanced medicine center, with cutting-edge technology and a national and international quality model”, added Uffre. For his part, Beltrán Crisóstomo highlighted that recognizing the work of illustrious UASD members, who transcend, reaffirms UASD's commitment to excellence and professional trajectory. “His vision, his preparation, and the formative contribution to several generations, as well as the modernization of the public and private health system of our country, make it so that, in my capacity as rector of the Primada de América university, today we invest as Honorary Professor to Doctor Rafael Sánchez Español”, stated the rector of UASD. For his part, Sánchez Español stated that he felt honored to receive this important award. "It is an honor to be here, at my alma mater, receiving this recognition. UASD has been, through the centuries, the cradle of great professionals. From its classrooms have graduated generations that have given continuity to its mission, sowing hope in everyone who wants to excel," specified the distinguished recipient. Sánchez Español said that he receives this recognition with humility and dedicated it to all those who contributed to his achievements.

“Entering my university again today, after almost fifty years, to receive this invaluable recognition, is for me and my family an immense satisfaction, which commits me to continue contributing to my country,” added the honoree.

In the solemn act were also present special guests, professors and family members of Dr. Sánchez Español.
