Luis Gil dominates the Nationals and gets the win after five solid innings

New York.- Giancarlo Stanton once again showed why he is one of the most feared hitters in Major League Baseball. The slugger hit a monstrous 451-foot home run and drove in the Yankees' five runs in the 5-1 victory over the Nationals this Tuesday at Yankee Stadium.

Dominican Luis Gil also shone from the mound, limiting Washington to one run in five innings to earn his eighth victory of the campaign.

Stanton, unstoppable in the second half

Stanton's performance adds to a historic streak since the All-Star Game. In 30 games, the outfielder is batting .366 (34 hits in 93 at-bats), with 13 home runs and 32 RBIs, recording an OPS of 1.248, the second best in the league in the second half, only behind Nick Kurtz of the Athletics (1.285).
"This, I feel -- and that's saying a lot -- is perhaps the best I've seen him, in terms of consistency," said manager Aaron Boone. "He's controlling the strike zone as well as I've ever seen him."

How the New York attack happened

The game took a turn in favor of the Yankees in the bottom of the third inning. Paul Goldschmidt led off with a double, and after walks to Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger, Stanton found the bases loaded. With a line of .340/.483/.745 this season with runners in scoring position, the slugger responded with a three-run double at 101.6 mph that hit the left-center field wall.

In the sixth inning, with the score at 3-1 and after the bullpen escaped a bases-loaded situation, Stanton punished the Nationals again. This time, he launched a 112.7 mph rocket that traveled 451 feet and landed in the left field stands, solidifying the victory.

Stanton now has 17 home runs and 46 RBIs in just 51 games this season, with an OPS of 1.051.

Luis Gil, solid on the mound

For his part, Luis Gil had another quality start, working five innings in which he allowed one run, three hits and struck out five. His only damage came in the third inning with an RBI single by CJ Abrams. The bullpen also delivered, with Fernando Cruz returning from the injured list and striking out a key batter with the bases loaded, while Tim Hill forced a groundout to third to close out the threat.

Next commitment

The Yankees, who have won 10 of their last 14 games, will look to secure the series against the Nationals this Wednesday, with Nestor Cortés scheduled to start the second game.
