ADOU Drives Debate on the Impact of Artificial Intelligence in Health

Santo Domingo. - The Dominican Association of Universities (ADOU) promoted a space for dialogue and reflection on the impact of artificial intelligence and technological innovation in the health sector, during the scientific conference “Health 4.0: Innovation, Education and Technology”. The president of ADOU, Wady Ramírez, highlighted how digital transformation is redefining the training of professionals and medical services in the Dominican Republic. “Today we understand that higher education cannot train professionals with their sights set only on the present, but must prepare our doctors, nurses, and specialists to practice in an environment deeply transformed by artificial intelligence and technology,” expressed Ramirez. Ramírez added that the digital transformation in health requires the joint work of all sectors: “The digital transformation in health is a task for everyone: universities, the State and professionals in service. That is why we deeply value the presence today of the ministers, rectors, directors and specialists who accompany us. Together we are called to continue building a national agenda with an increasingly humane, dignified and advanced health,” he affirmed. The Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Franklin García Fermín, indicated that this scientific conference contributes to the consolidation of a national agenda in the area of health and higher education, aligned with the sustainable development goals and with the vision of a country that aspires to be more competitive, equitable and resilient. During the day, the president of the Latin American Artificial Intelligence Association, Doctor Francisco Mayorga, presented the conference “The Role of AI and Technology in 21st Century Health”; on his part, international consultant Andrés Conde spoke about “Professional Training in Health in the Digital Age: University Management and Policies in the Face of Technological Advancement and AI”. "The main problem we have in the models is data preparation, the technology is there, the challenge is to put the data in the language of AI," said Andrés Conde. Data scientist Darian Vargas gave the conference "AI, Ethics and University: Regulatory and Human Challenges" and highlighted that: "The time has come for any hospital, regardless of its location, to have a platform that allows for the collection of quality data. When you have that quality data, you can talk about an artificial intelligence model," Vargas assured.
