Abinader highlights DR's leadership in the manufacturing of medical and electronic equipment

Santo Domingo. – President Luis Abinader highlighted that the Dominican Republic is consolidating as a regional leader in the manufacturing of medical devices and electrical and electronic equipment, with a growing position in international markets and a strong performance in free zones.

During La Semanal con la Prensa, the president informed that 42 medical equipment manufacturing companies operate in the country, of which 7 are among the top 10 in the world, including Medtronic, Baxter, Cardinal Health and B. Braun.

In 2024, exports from this sector reached US$2,800 million, equivalent to 33.4 % of exports from free trade zones and 22.2 % of the national total. Accumulated investment amounts to US$1,940.4 million, generating 33,525 direct jobs, mostly held by women. The main manufactured products include medical devices, transfusion equipment, sutures, ostomy bags, neurosurgical valves, and respiratory items. Its main destinations are the United States, Puerto Rico, the Netherlands, and China. Regarding the electrical and electronic sector, Abinader pointed out that 29 companies operate in the country, whose exports totaled US$1,164.4 million in 2024. This segment generates more than 10,400 direct jobs and exports products such as switches, smartphones, connectors, sensors, and transformers. The Head of State also highlighted that the Dominican Republic has been identified as a "leading candidate" to attract investments in semiconductor assembly and testing plants, thanks to its skilled workforce, strategic location, and a favorable business climate.
