At least 20 people died this Tuesday due to a fire that spread in a seven-story building in Jakarta, where firefighters are searching for survivors, the Police reported this Tuesday. In statements to journalists, the head of the Central Jakarta Police, Susatyo Purnomo, confirmed that 20 people died at the scene, which until 4:00 p.m. local time (11:00 GMT) had not been fully inspected due to smoke and high temperatures. Among the deceased are five men and 15 women, including a pregnant woman, according to the Police.

The public news agency Antara added that at least 15 people were evacuated alive from the scene and that firefighters suspect a short circuit caused the incident. Susatyo explained that firefighters inspected the fourth and fifth floors of the building, which houses several shops, but have not yet been able to check the sixth or seventh floors due to the density of the smoke. "Special firefighting equipment continues to be used and oxygen is being added so that the agents can reach the top," he pointed out. Several lifeless bodies were extracted from the scene wrapped in red bags, while some of the survivors received medical attention and emotional support near the site. In addition to water release, firefighters use cranes and have broken glass walls in the building to speed up the extinction and search for survivors. On August 30th, three people died and five more were injured in a fire at a government building set by protesters in Makassar, in the central area of the Indonesian archipelago.
