China opposes Israeli recognition of Somaliland

The Chinese government expressed its "serious concern" and "firm opposition" on Monday to Israel's recognition of the separatist Somali region of Somaliland as an independent state, while reaffirming its support for the Mogadishu Executive. In a press conference, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated today that, in accordance with the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law, Somaliland is an "inseparable part" of Somalia's territory. "China firmly supports Somalia's sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, and opposes any act that seeks to divide its territory," the spokesperson asserted.

In Lin's words, the Somaliland issue is an "internal affair" of Somalia and "must be resolved by the Somali people in a manner consistent with their national conditions and their Constitution." "External countries must end undue interference, and no country should, for selfish interests, instigate and support internal secessionist forces of other countries," the Chinese official said. "We urge the authorities of Somaliland to recognize the situation, immediately cease secessionist activities, and end collusion with external forces," he added. These statements came after Israel on Friday became the first country to formally recognize the self-proclaimed Republic of Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state, a move that drew strong criticism from Somalia and the entire Arab world.
