PORT CHARLOTTE, Florida.– Dominican third baseman Junior Caminero arrived at the spring training camp of the Tampa Bay Rays with renewed determination and clear goals for the 2026 season, demonstrating his growth both on and off the field.

In his first appearance before the press at Charlotte Sports Park, the 22-year-old surprised everyone by answering in English without the need for an interpreter, reflecting the work done during the offseason. "I don't want to use an interpreter," he said with a smile, aware of the leadership he now represents as one of the main young figures in the organization.

In Search of the Golden Glove

After a 2025 campaign in which he connected 45 home runs, drove in 110 runs, and finished ninth in the American League MVP voting, Caminero has raised his defensive aspirations. "My goal this year is a Gold Glove. If not, to be close," said the third baseman, who notably improved his performance at third base to become a reliable piece in the final innings.

Although he was one home run and 11 RBIs away from matching historical club records set by Carlos Peña, the Dominican says he will not put pressure on himself with offensive numbers. “I'm not thinking about 50 or 40 home runs. I know who I am,” he said.

Better physical preparation and focus on health

During the break, Caminero worked intensely in Tampa to strengthen his physique. Although he clarified that he did not lose weight, he explained that he toned his body and gained muscle mass with the aim of staying strong throughout the season, especially after experiencing back discomfort last September. "I want to play in October and stay healthy all year," he pointed out, focused on pacing efforts to arrive in optimal condition for the final stretch.

Opening to a contract extension

Under team control until 2030, Caminero acknowledged that he would be willing to listen to a possible contract extension with Tampa Bay. "I would like to, but it's not my decision. I feel like this is my city, Tampa," he expressed, making it clear that for now his priority is to focus on the field while his agent and the management handle any negotiations.

World Baseball Classic Illusion

The Dominican will also be part of the Quisqueyan selection in the next World Baseball Classic, a team led by Albert Pujols. It will be his first participation in the tournament. "I can't wait. Representing the Dominican Republic is incredible. I will try to put on a show and enjoy it," he affirmed with enthusiasm.

A special season

Off the field, Caminero experienced one of the most important moments of his life with the birth of his daughter Valentina at the end of November. Fatherhood, he said, has been the most significant experience he has had.
