World Obesity Day

In the framework of World Obesity Day, which is commemorated every March 4th and is promoted by the World Obesity Federation, health organizations, public and private institutions, and health professionals call on society to recognize obesity as a complex chronic disease that requires comprehensive, stigma-free care based on scientific evidence. Obesity is one of the main public health challenges worldwide. It is associated with an increased risk of diseases such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and some types of cancer, in addition to significantly affecting the quality of life and emotional well-being of those who suffer from it. Specialists emphasize that obesity is not simply the result of individual decisions, but rather responds to multiple biological, genetic, social, environmental, and economic factors. Therefore, its approach must be multidisciplinary and include prevention, timely diagnosis, medical treatment, nutritional support, physical activity, and psychological support when necessary.

On this World Obesity Day, the importance of the following is emphasized:
  • Promote public policies that promote healthy environments.
  • Ensure equitable access to health services and treatment.
  • Encourage nutritional education from an early age.
  • Combat stigma and discrimination associated with body weight.
The commemoration also seeks to raise awareness in the community about the need to act together —governments, private sector, health professionals, and citizens— to generate sustainable changes that promote healthy lifestyles. The call is clear: transform the conversation about obesity, prioritize health, and build environments that allow all people to live with well-being and dignity.
