Santo Domingo.– Regarding the death of driver David Abreu Quesada in Santiago, and the lack of first aid as a preventive measure in emergencies, Dr. Pilar Guerrero explains the importance of using a tourniquet as an emergency measure to control severe bleeding, especially in the extremities.
The specialist indicated that a tourniquet is a device or instrument used to stop the flow of blood in a limb by applying pressure, with the aim of controlling or stopping a hemorrhage that could endanger life.
Regarding its application, it was indicated that it should be placed approximately five centimeters above the wound, tightening firmly until the bleeding and pulse circulation stop. In addition, it was emphasized that speed is essential, recommending that the procedure be performed in an estimated time of 15 to 20 seconds.“It is a first aid technique that can make the difference between life and death when there is significant blood loss. In emergency situations, there are three physical methods for managing wounds or external bleeding: wound packing, compressive bandage, and tourniquet, the latter being key in cases of massive bleeding,” explained the doctor.
