Abinader regrets the death of José “Pepe” Mujica and describes him as a "moral and human reference"

Santo Domingo.– The President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, expressed his sorrow this Tuesday for the death of former Uruguayan President José “Pepe” Mujica, a whom he defined as a benchmark of humility, wisdom, and social commitment in Latin America.

“I deeply regret the departure of José ‘Pepe’ Mujica. I had the honor of knowing him and learning from his wisdom and humility. I express my condolences to his family, the Uruguayan people, and all of Latin America, who today bid farewell to a moral and human reference”.

José Mujica, recognized worldwide for his austere lifestyle and his direct speech, passed away this Tuesday at the age of 89 after battling an illness that kept him away from public life in recent months. His legacy continues to be a source of inspiration for many leaders in the region.

The former president suffered from esophageal cancer. In mid-May, his wife and former vice president of Uruguay, Lucía Topolansky, as well as the current president of that country, Yamandú Orsi, confirmed his serious health condition.

Already in early January 2025, former President communicated that the disease had spread through his body and there was no way to stop it. "The cancer in the esophagus is colonizing my liver. I can't stop it with anything. Why? Because I am an old man and because I have two chronic diseases. I can't have a biochemical treatment or surgery because my body can't handle it," he commented. And he added: "I am condemned, brother. I've come this far."
