Mexican politician Nora Alicia Biebrich, mayor of Bacanora, was shot this Tuesday on the Huetamo-Mazatlán highway. The official survived, while her son died of blood loss, authorities reported.
Both left Hermosillo for Mazatlán in a truck and, when trying to overtake a vehicle at kilometer 60, a traffic incident occurred, said the prosecutor of the state of Sonora, Gustavo Salas.

"Later, that vehicle catches up with them and starts shooting," Salas declared at a press conference. "At this moment we have no data that allows us to assume that it was a direct attack against the municipal president of Bacanora," he added. Local media indicated that Biebrich was ambushed by armed individuals. However, the prosecutor limited it to a traffic incident and ruled out, for the moment, that this event is related to the explosion of violence registered after the killing of Nemesio Oseguera, alias 'el Mencho', who led the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). In fact, Salas indicated that "the shots are grouped both on the left side of the driver's door, and head-on, where the aggression was specifically towards the driver of the vehicle, not the passenger." Meanwhile, the mayor is out of danger. It is unknown if there are any detainees in this case, while political parties are already demanding a transparent investigation to clarify the facts and find those responsible.
