A statement about the death of Jeffrey Epstein has appeared in the files recently published by the United States Department of Justice, but it includes a date that seems to precede the moment when the sex offender was officially found dead inside his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York.
The statement, issued by the Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York and dated Friday, August 9, 2019, states that the magnate had already been found unconscious and declared dead.
However, prison records and official reports show that Epstein was not found unconscious until the morning of August 10, when a prison official bringing him breakfast found him in his cell, as highlighted by the Daily Mail.
Last July, Axios reported that the FBI and the Department of Justice concluded that there is no evidence that he was murdered. Investigators found "no incriminating list of clients" of the financier, "no credible evidence [...] that Epstein blackmailed prominent people" and no "evidence that could justify an investigation against non-indicted third parties," the media outlet noted, citing the official statement from the authorities.
