Inequality levels increased in 2025 compared to 2024, in both urban and rural areas, according to the Monetary Poverty report published by the Ministry of Finance and Economy.
The report states that the Gini coefficient (an economic indicator that measures the level of income or wealth inequality in a population) for household income stood at 0.389 in 2025, above the 2024 value (+0.003)
Likewise, the Palma index was located at 1.67, reflecting an increase compared to the previous year.
"Overall, these results suggest that, although income growth favored poverty reduction, income distribution limited some of the progress, reinforcing the need to sustain policies that promote quality employment, reduce territorial and gender gaps, and promote a more inclusive improvement in well-being," the report states.
It is also revealed that extreme poverty decreased from 2.4% to 2.2% during the year 2025, which is equivalent to 24,749 people leaving this condition behind.
As 172,346 people overcame the monetary poverty line, while moderate poverty fell to 15.1% (–1.4%).
